Plant, Knives, Fruit & Cucumbers, 4x8, Acrylic on Shaped Plywood, 1974.
One of Chandler's "Urban Weaponry Series, this piece represents the artist's commitment to creating works that were useful to his people, particularly African American women. For them, the household has familiar elements like plants and fruit but some things women keep in the house also act as weapons when necessary. In this painting, the knives are weapons of course. But so are the lemons (their acidic juice) and the soil in the pot (both of which women can put in the eyes of an assailant). A woman also can smash the plant's pot over an invader's head.
